Camping With Your Dog

Camping With Your Dog: Tips for a Safe, Fun, and Stress-Free Trip 🐾⛺

Few things are as heartwarming as watching your dog stretch out under the stars, sniff the forest breeze, or trot happily along a lakeside trail. Camping with your dog can create lasting memories, deepen your bond, and give you both a much-needed break from daily routines. But for all the joy, there are also challenges; unfamiliar environments, strange noises, other campers (and their pets), and the logistics of keeping your dog comfortable and safe away from home.

That’s why preparation is key! With a little planning, you can turn camping into one of the most rewarding adventures you and your dog share.

In the Upper Peninsula we haven't really had the great weather for camping that we typically would. Between the 90+ degree heat waves, the sprinkling rain that goes all day long and the air quality from the smoke coming from Canada, we haven't been on as many trips as we typically would. But we do have a few trips coming up including a Yooper Paws Weekend Campout to help dog owners with dogs that are struggling in camping environments.

5 Key Tips for Planning a Successful Camping Trip With Your Dog

1. Prepare Before You Go

Introduce your dog to the sights, sounds, and routines of camping before the big trip. Pitch a tent in the backyard, practice sleeping in it together, or enjoy a picnic at a local park. These small steps help reduce stress when you transition to a real campsite.

2. Pack With Calm in Mind

Bring your dog’s familiar items—bed, crate, toys, and even a favorite blanket. Don’t forget practical tools like a long line, harness, collapsible water bowls, and plenty of shade options. Familiar smells and routines are reassuring anchors in a new environment.

3. Plan for Introductions

Campsites often mean lots of new people, dogs, and distractions. Not every pup wants to be the social butterfly of the campground! Use calm walks, distance, and observation to help your dog adjust at their own pace. A “slow hello” is better than rushing into greetings.

4. Balance Adventure With Rest

It’s tempting to fill your trip with hikes, swimming, and campfire games—but dogs need downtime, too. A secure, shaded retreat with enrichment activities (like a snuffle mat or frozen lick mat) allows your dog to recharge. Remember, a relaxed dog is a happy camper.

5. Have a Safety Plan

From leash laws to sudden thunderstorms, unexpected events happen. Think ahead:

  • Where will your dog rest safely during fireworks?

  • Who can help if you need to step away?

  • Do you have a first aid kit for both people and pets?

These answers give you peace of mind and help prevent stressful situations.
